HYPNOSIS

The difference between Stage Hypnosis and Clinical Hypnotherapy

There are a plethora of myths and urban legends circulating about hypnosis and hypnotists. Did you hear the one about:

An elderly Mormon who hypnotised two women 35 and 38 and had sex with both of them while they were in a trance.

Or victims in South America approached by young boys, who by touching them lightly and looking in their eyes induced a deep somnambulistic trance and then stole all their belongings.
Or George Adamski, a long time hoaxer who at the time of his death in his seventies, was still hustling and offering to teach people how to use self-hypnosis in order to visit Venus and Mars -- for a fee of fifty dollars.
Or people who have been under hypnosis and the hypnotist dies. And..........Oh No........... because he is the one who induced the trance in the first place, these poor people are stuck in hypnosis for ever and ever and ever.......
Okay, we are being a little bit facetious here, but that is honestly how some people regard hypnosis.

TIME TO DISPEL SOME MYTHS!

You cannot , I repeat cannot be hypnotised by anyone, you hypnotise yourself. All the skilled hypnotist does is provide the right combination of safety, relaxation and gentle words to assist you in reaching a trance state.
While in a hypnotic trance you will be aware of external sounds. They probably won't bother you but you will be aware of them.
If anyone makes a suggestion to you while in a hypnotic state that opposes your belief system you will immediately come out of trance.
If at any time you feel uncomfortable or uneasy you can immediately come out of trance.
Hypnosis is, in it's basic terms, simply a form of deep relaxation, It is a tool used in therapy, not the therapy itself and it's value lies in allowing the therapist to talk directly to your subconscious mind.
The majority of people between the ages of 7 and 75 can be hypnotised - IF THEY WANT TO BE!! No hypnotist can hypnotise anybody who does not want to be hypnotised.

Stage Hypnotism

And now for the stage hypnotist. Now we've all been to stage shows where the hypnotist has called for volunteers. A number of hands go up, and in general, the hypnotist invites them all onto the stage. There then follows a series of tests when the hypnotist accepts and rejects volunteers. Most people think the hypnotist is testing to see whether or not a volunteer can be hypnotised - WRONG - nearly everyone can be hypnotised if they want to be. What the hypnotist is looking for are the extroverts, the show offs, volunteers game for a laugh. Because the hypnotist knows that these people will relish five minutes of fame, won't mind barking like a dog or quacking like a duck. The hypnotist is never asking them to do things that they don't want to do, in every case he is simply making it easy for them to realise their fantasies. After all if they do go a bit too far they can always say 'It wasn't my fault, I was hypnotised!!!'
The difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy is simple. Hypnosis is generally associated with stage hypnotists and leisure activities. Hypnotherapy is a clinical therapy that uses hypnosis as a tool to help clients resolve their problems
